Energy Efficiency
- Use Energy-Efficient Appliances: Opt for devices rated A or ENERGY STAR-certified to minimize energy use and emissions.
- Switch to LED Bulbs: Use LED bulbs instead of incandescent ones – they last longer and consume up to 80% less energy.
- Heating: Set your thermostat to 18-21°C and use programmable timers to heat your home efficiently.
- Smart Heating Practices: If your property has smart heaters, program them to charge during off-peak hours and adjust settings based on your daily schedule. Keep doors and windows closed in heated rooms and ensure good insulation throughout your home to retain warmth effectively. Regularly review energy consumption through the heater’s display or app, making adjustments as needed to maintain efficiency.
- Renewable sources: Select energy from renewable sources.
- Unplug Devices: Disconnect electronics when not in use to prevent energy waste.
- Laundry: Wash clothes at 30°C and air dry when possible instead of using a tumble dryer.
Water Conservation
- Install Low-Flow Fixtures: Request low-flow taps and showerheads from your landlord or use water-saving alternatives.
- Adopt Water-Saving Habits: Turn off taps while brushing teeth, take shorter showers (under 5 minutes), and run dishwashers/washing machines only with full loads. Choose biodegradable and non-toxic detergents.
- Leaks and malfunctioning: Report leaks to property management promptly to prevent water waste. Even the smallest leak can lead to huge waste of water or a potential emergency.
- Efficient appliances: Use eco-friendly washing machines and dishwashers, and run them only with full loads.
Recycling and Waste Management
- Separate Waste Properly: Familiarise yourself with local recycling regulations and use designated bins for recyclables, compost, and general waste. Separate recyclables (paper, plastic, glass, metal) from general waste and use designated bins.
- Food waste: Compost food scraps where possible or use council-provided food waste bins.
- Reduce Single-Use Plastics: Replace disposable items with reusable alternatives like cloth bags and glass containers.
Sustainable Transport
- Public Transport: Use buses, trains, or cycling instead of driving where possible.
- Car Sharing: Consider carpooling with neighbours or using a car club.
- Cycling & Walking: Use bicycle storage facilities and pedestrian pathways for short journeys.
Eco-Friendly Living
- Green Spaces: Support local biodiversity by planting pollinator-friendly plants on balconies or in communal gardens.
- Ethical Consumption: Choose locally sourced, organic, or Fairtrade products where available, including non-toxic cleaning products.
- Repairs & Upcycling: Repair items before replacing them, and consider second-hand options for furniture and clothing.
- Maintenance: If not provided already, ask property management for self-fix information and manuals to seek to reduce the need for transport to homes and associated costs.
Community Engagement
Engage in community sustainability efforts: Join green initiatives, attend eco-workshops and share your ideas with our management team.
